Critic Review
Laxmii (2020) Aasif (Akshay Kumar) is a businessman who dabbles in the marble and granite business. He also doubles up as a member of an association which dispels myths about ghosts and spirits. "Jis din sach mein mere saamne bhoot aaya naa toh maa kasam chudiyaan pehen lunga chudiyaan," our hero proudly proclaims whenever anyone talks about the existence of supernatural beings. When Aasif and his Hindu wife Rashmi (Kiara Advani) visit the latter's estranged family to make amendments for their elopement, little do they know that their family reunion would soon turn into a run-in with a bloodthirsty spirit of a transwoman, who is out to seek revenge from her wrongdoers..

Speaking of Kiara, I only recently learnt (thanks to Wikipedia) that her true-life name is Alia, which she had to change for screen, because there's already an Alia Bhatt in Bollywood. Look closely though: every scene, you'll find her gently mimicking Dee.

Irrespective of its aims, Laxmii serves to further otherise the already ostracised trans community. It is also tacky and insufferable..

Claiming to break stereotypes by heavily stereotyping people across the board is a device bad Bollywood never seems to get enough of: all the transgender characters clap their hands, and dance around a fire; a good Muslim character wears a ‘topi’ and .

All said and done, Kanchana didn’t need a remake & hence Laxmii isn’t a film anyone asked for. It’s one of those stories which are manageable for the period they released in & shouldn’t be revived. So, reviving Laxmii (read: Kanchana) from the dea.

Akshay Kumar-Kiara Advani's horror comedy promises you laughs and thrills the size of 'Burj Khalifa'. Unfortunately, it barely reaches even half its length..
