Jl 50 (2020) A passenger plane -- AO 26 -- is hijacked and in a remote hamlet near Bagdogra, another plane JL 50’s just crashed. The catch is that the latter had taken off from the Kolkata airport 35 years ago and was never seen since that fateful day. How did it crash after all these years? And what transpired? The year is 1984 and pilot Bhiu Ghosh (Ritika Anand, also the producer) is gorging on some quick breakfast while her mind wanders back to the thoughts of a lost loved one. “Kab tak aisa chalega? Bahut kuch hota hai zindagi mein par kuch ruk nahin jaata…” explains the mother. “Aami bhaalo achhi, Maa,” Bhiu assures her and leaves the table, saying she is getting late for her flight. Bhiu Ghosh is not seen for 35 long years until one day, she does..
JL50 is a good step in the genre. A bit more detailing and insight in the world could have made for a way better show. But what we get is also appreciable. Watch it for a fantastic Pankaj Kapur and a good story. There is an Interstellar styled Easter egg too (just a hint, not literally). Come back here and tell me in the comments if you agree. Abhay Deol and Pankaj Kapur (the latter in particular) try very hard to keep a straight face through it all. As you can imagine, it isn't easy for them - or the audience..
‘Jl 50’ is a culmination of mythology, warfare, history and science but it needed an in-depth handling which the plot-line unfortunately started to lack right after the very first episode. But we firmly believe that it would be criminal not to encourage something as daring as this and so the sporadic VFX hiccups are forgiven just this one time. Why? Because, as Professor Das, said, “America mein ho toh phenomena, humare country main ho toh only a story?”.
