Thalaivi (2021) A teenaged Jayalalithaa (Kangana Ranaut) reluctantly agrees to act in Tamil movies upon her mother’s (Bhagyashree) insistence. She plays the leading lady opposite the legendary Tamil actor MG Ramachandran (Arvind Swami) in her maiden film. Love blossoms between MGR and Jayaa during the making of the film. Their pairing becomes a huge hit and they continue to act together in numerous movies. However, MGR distances himself from Jayaa when he decides to step into full-fledged politics. Due to the pain of separation, Jayaa goes low-key and also starts losing film opportunities. In a dramatic turn of events, MGR welcomes Jayaa into his political party. Through her selfless work for poor students, Jayaa earns the famous moniker ‘Amma’ and rises in politics in no time. But MGR’s tragic demise lands Jayaa in countless hurdles as she faces humiliation within the party and even from the opposition party headed by Karunanidhi (Nasser). Thalaivii chronicles Jayaa’s inspirational rise in the male-dominated political world and pays tribute to her glorious legacy as an iconic leader and ends when she becomes Tamil Nadu CM..

Thalaivii is a disjointed biopic that acts as a showreel for Kangana Ranaut's version of Jayalalithaa..

One can’t help as Thalaivi reminds us of classic Mahanati and comparisons do come as both are the stories of two legendary actresses. Sympathy dawns on Jaya’s role for losing all and fighting all alone. Unlike Savitri, Jaya’s story has a successful ending. The underlying point in Thalaivi is that a woman succeeds in the male-dominated fields – politics and films. This is where Jaya’s story touches the hearts. She deserves a befitting tribute and that’s what Thalaivi offers..

Kangana Ranaut for all her power-packed performance, at times her costumes gave her up and at times her lip sync. Food for thought. Would another actress skyrocket Thalaivi to another level? Considering Vijay's missing powerful incidents of Jayalalithaa and dominance of other characters instead of Jayalalithaa in her biopic where some of her lows been completely ignored,.

And the big moments work very well... how Jaya managed to pair up with MJR the most despite stiff opposition; how Ammu became Amma; how she was mistreated at the funeral of MJR; and how her pluck not just helped her defeat a cocky rival but also made the men who were with her bow down to her.
