Newton (2017) NEWTON is the story of a government officer trying to conduct a free and fair election against all odds. Newton Kumar (Rajkummar Rao) is a righteous government officer living in a small town in Chhattisgarh. He is entrusted with the task of going to a Maoist-infected town and ensure that the residents there are able to vote despite the odds stacked against them. The officer entrusted with the security of Newton and his team is Aatma Singh (Pankaj Tripathi) who understands the difficulties of the region and has his own way of dealing with things. Newton doesn’t agree with him and this creates a friction between them. What happens on D-Day and whether Newton succeeds in his endeavour forms the rest of the film..

Except for momentary descent into needless cliché (a foreign TV hack who has clearly helicoptered in on an ‘Indian election tourism’ tour), and a couple of flat notes, ‘Newton’ stays firmly on course. Join it..

Does this film bear the scale and wide-screen drama to move you to bits and pieces? I wish it did, but unsure if that was ever the intention. To be fair, it does catch up on that front at some point. Does it hold you right till the very end, gently nudgin.

- this film has everything going for it. 'Newton' has dared to take on an issue that our vast majority turns a blind eye to, and slaps us out of our blissful ignorance. Amidst laughing, it'll leave you thinking, which - and we need to be reminded of this .

On the whole, NEWTON is embellished with powerful performances. But it’s a niche film and hence holds very limited entertainment value for the traditional cinema going audience. Also, the lack of buzz and multiple releases this week will make it tough f.
