sri vasavi vaibhavam (2012)

Vasavi is an avatar of Parvati and the name has a strong connection with the Vysya community, so don't wonder why ex-CM Rosaiah's name is present as an acknowledgement to in the title cards. Director Udayabhaskar who has been associated with producer Doraswamy Raju's recent devotional movies handles the dialogues and direction once again and shows his grip on the story and screenplay too.

A Gandharva (Sai Kiran) who is a Siva devotee and is blessed with boons is flirting with a Vysya woman, wants to marry her and the latter who is harassed approaches Parvati for help. She curses him for misusing his boon and says he will be relieved from it after he is born as a human. The Gandharva (Sai Kiran) is now Vishnu Vardhan Sarvabhouma, born as a Kshatriya i.e., great grandson of the Pandavas and this time again he takes a fascination for a Vysya woman Vasavi who is an avatar of Parvati.

After a victory march he rests at Vasavi's home, spots her and wants to marry her failing which he will wage a war on the Vysyas; Vasavi has vowed to remain a Kanya and do Agni Pravesam on an auspicious day. Her parents and the community hailing from 100 plus gothras will also enter the pyre with her. The citizens of Penugonda are perplexed and wonder why Vasavi is sacrificing her life and that of her people when all she can do is marry the Kshatriya and live happily.

It is a revelation that people thought in a broad manner and encouraged inter-caste marriage those days. An advisor to Vasavi's father shows wisdom when he says, "Our community is good in trade and commerce but we are not skilled in warfare. Why not convince Vasavi to marry the Kshatriya."

Vasavi, the aadapaduchu of the Vysyas exhorts her community (the devotees of Siva) to follow dharma, not harass the poor for interest while they seek loans, do fair trade, contribute to charity and temples and treat women with respect before entering the pyre. She stresses that she is doing it not because she is scared but to avoid bloodshed.

Siva referring to Parvati's (Vasavi's) mother on earth as "Kottha Attagaru" (new mother-in-law) is amusing. That Goddess Vasavi is a Vysya is emphasised. Meena plays Parvati and Suhasini is Vasavi. Ashok Kumar is the messenger. Sai Kiran, Suman, Sana and rest of the small time artistes put up an impressive show. There is no over acting by any of them.
